The undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers head south to take on the 1-4 Mississippi State Bulldogs. West Virginia didn’t look much like the fourth ranked team in the nation last week as it managed just a 27-10 victory over the 1-3 East Carolina Pirates. I’m expecting a better performance out of the Mountaineers Saturday but will it be enough to cover the points? We’ll take a look inside the matchup.

West Virginia is the best rushing team in the country averaging 299.8 yards per game, but East Carolina was able to hold the Mountaineers to just 153 yards on the ground and starting tailback Steve Slaton was held to a season low 80 yards averaging just 3.3 yards per carry. You can bet that coach Sylvester Croom has looked at East Carolina’s defensive game plan against the Mountaineers inside and out and the Bulldogs will go about defending West Virginia’s rushing attack in a similar manner. The good news is that defending the run is what coach Croom’s defense does best. They were torched through the air last week by JaMarcus Russel who threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Pat White hasn’t been asked to do much passing for the Mountaineers, but he will have to this week as that’s all coach Croom is going to them. Last week White was asked to pass more and he recorded 216 yards through the air and two touchdowns but he also threw three interceptions. The Bulldogs will be hoping that they can succeed in forcing several interceptions as well as it is going to take some big plays for Mississippi State to stay in this game.

West Virginia hasn’t started a season 5-0 since 1996, but they’ll reach the 5-0 mark Saturday. The question remains if the Mountaineers will be able to cover the spread? In order to do so they are going to have to beat Mississippi State through the air because they are going to stack the line all game long. Does quarterback Pat White have what it takes to get the job done Saturday on the road against an SEC opponent? Jimmy Boyd has your answer for Saturday’s big game. Play this one with me and take your book to the cleaners.
