Quick Thoughts on the MLB Playoffs and Series Bets

Billard-Spiel Situation

San Diego with better relief pitching and a team in better form with home-field advantage should take the Cardinals out. San Diego is 14-2 in their last 16 home games. St. Louis is 17-35 in their last 52 road games. San Diego is 8-2 their last ten games, St. Louis just 3-7. If only Albert Pujols could pitch.

The St. Louis pitching staff has been below average as the season wound down. Injuries have also been a detriment. The Cards were only 35-39 since the All-Star Break. San Diego came on at the end of the year finishing 14-2 at home. Jake Peavy has pitched well recently and has an agenda for this year as he was a no-show last year for the play-offs. Toss in Chris Young who has been great on the road and a solid Clay Hensley, and you have a quality starting rotation. Linebrink and Hoffman in relief shut the door on the fading Cardinals.

The very streaky Dodgers stand a fair shot at winning the series over the favored Mets due to the uncertainty of New York’s starting staff, but New York does have an exceptional bullpen and great hitting. Beltran and Delgado could light it up for the Mets. Gun to my head & I will take a shot with the dog Dodgers.

Oakland just keeps on winning. It doesn’t matter that they don’t score runs, they are doing the job. The best weapon the A’s have is their spacious ball park where home runs are a premium. Harden and Haren are very good pitchers, after that is gets dicey.

The Twins Johan Santana hasn’t lost at home since Babe Ruth was circling the bases. With the home-field advantage, that should mark two victories for Minny automatically. I like the offensive advantage the Twins have along with some rejuvenated starters.

The Detroit Tigers looked like the strongest team in the American League up to the All-Star Break. Don’t know if they ate too much bagged spinach, but Detroit became an average team after the break only going 36-37 with every one of their starting pitchers having a higher ERA in the second half compared to their pre-All Star stats. They had a chance to clinch the AL Title, but dropped three games at home against the Triple-A Kansas City Royals.

New York’s pitching is very suspect, but their hitting is not. The Yankees beat the Tigers. The Yankees are 16-6 at home against left-handed starters this year. The Tigers’ opening game pitcher is lefty Nate Robertson. Make it 17-6 for New York. I’ll take New York over an average Tiger team after the break due to their superior offensive firepower

I have bet the Padres and the Yankees to win their series. The only prop I bet was for Charlie Sheen to be the Most Valuable Player.
